New Office - 17/09/2012

We’ve moved again! This time it is only about twenty metres downstairs and has been relatively painless. All contact details remain the same. We have a new VOIP phone system and would appreciate your feedback on it.

Working from a ‘home office’ again has proved to be a really good idea. Compared to the CBD, it is far more convenient, avoids the commute, the parking hassles and is significantly cheaper. The staff are mostly traveling against the rush-hour and at the end of the day, the CBD is just dirty, noisy, smoggy and expensive. We have tuis in the bush outside.

WORLD FAMOUS IN NZ - 16/09/2012

We recently got a great write-up in the NZ Herald. It’s all totally true of course, possibly a little understated even. If you missed it, you can catch up on it here.

Big Brother is Watching You and He Lies! - 29/08/2012

True story. Earlier this year, Matthew was working late one Sunday night when there was a stern thumping on the front door. There were two of Meadowbank’s finest constabulary. Apparently his Android cell-phone had dialled “111” and treated the emergency operator to sounds of a violent domestic incident. They tracked the number and were at the door within minutes. Not being satisfied with his protestations of innocence, they duly woke up Mrs Roscoe to ensure that she had in fact not been beating him up and then turned their attention to the cell-phone. It showed no record of any calls being made that day.

Don’t trust the little green robot, he is a sneak!

What’s New in V12 - 25/08/2012

  1. There is an updater available. This is highly recommended, if you need assistance, call us.
  2. SQL commands. Most clients will have no interest in this but it is already making a huge difference to the way we do things giving us, in some instances, the ability to both develop faster and deliver a process that runs faster.

Same But Different - 29/07/2012

You will see a new invoice from 1/4/12. We have reformed as Foundation Data Ltd (trading as FBSL) and our GST number will change etc. This represents no more than Chris’s final exit and it is business as usual in all regards.

Sayonara Stapleton-san - 25/07/2012

After nearly a year back in the UK, Chris has faced the inevitable and got a real job. His last day “in the office” is today and after Easter he will be commuting to London for 5-day stretches. He will no longer be available to service his residual clients who will be transferred back to the Auckland office. We wish him the very best for the future.

Thanks For Your Patience - 22/07/2012

We’ve been pretty busy for a while now and the backlog on minor work has stretched out to weeks in some cases. We are slowly whittling it down and we’d like to thank those who have been affected for their patience.

Make Mine iPad! - 20/07/2012

iPad-related solutions represent about 80% of our current workload. Apart from the fact that iPads are way-cool, there are several compelling reasons to consider Foundation, FileMaker and the iPad.
  1. Break-down the interpersonal barrier. Use: Sales, Consulting, Medical. If you sit down beside someone and show them your presentation, or notes, or their personal record; you have crossed the invisible line and have a more intimate connection with them. Don’t take our word for it…
  2. Write, draw and store. That’s right, you can do handwriting and drawings (schematics, concepts, layout plans) on your iPad and we can store it in the relevant record in your FileMaker solution for easy recall at any time. In a meeting situation, it is far less intrusive to write notes on an iPad than type into a keyboard. We are now using this for our own internal processes.
  3. Remote access to your own ‘cloud’. Use: off-site work teams, sales reps. There are already a multitude of ‘cookie-cutter’ solutions for various tasks like emails and calenders, address books etc. How much more productive would your off-site work force be if they were able to access your FileMaker solution? The iPad is smaller, lighter and has a better battery life than any comparable netbook or laptop.
  4. Offline Productivity. Use: Sales, Tradespeople, Agriculture. Continue working when the team is out of range. We’ve developed our own synchronisation technology to let your staff keep working when they are in remote locations where data access is poor. Next time they are in range they can upload and download all the latest data at the click of a button. If you are considering a website interface to access your data, it can’t do this.
  5. TOTAL COST OF OWNERSHIP. If you aren’t sold yet, consider this. FileMaker Go solves so many of the issues involved in making a system that works on PCs, Macs and tablets that the development cost for an iPad solution is going to be significantly less than a comparable application for an Android device. So much so that any difference in the hardware cost is going to be more than offset by the development savings. That’s worth knowing.
